275 players registered for the tournament (although only 213 came on the first beautiful, warm day of 2004) with 34 elementary schools and four middle schools sending teams.
Kindergarten and 1st Grade: Brandon Boone (Wade) suggested that he has a great future as a chessplayer, charming the adults while teaching his opponents good lessons.
Second Grade: Gregory Beresovsky (Farmland) had a great day, winning all of his games to emerge as champion.
Third Grade: Andrew Freix (Bull Run) beat co-champion Lucas Owen (Haycock) in their blitz game to decode who got which of the top trophies.
Fourth Grade: In the largest section of the tournament, there were three players to win all four games. In the blitz chess play-offs, Eric Passmore (Louise Archer) defeated Zach Clare (Janney) and Arman Khojandi (Kent Gardens) to earn the first place trophy.
Fifth Grade: Kate Verba (homeschooled in Washington, DC) beat the other champions, Max Wang (Louise Archer) and Alexander Rizik (Maret) in the blitz chess play-offs.
Sixth Grade: Aryan Khojandi (Kent Gardens) swept the section.
Seventh Grade: Dan Aldrich (Maret) narrowly edged co-champion Adrian Dipple (Takoma Park Middle School) on third tie-break to take the first place trophy.
Eighth Grade: Byron Hood (Longfellow) had some stiff competition but managed to win all four games in the top section of the tournament.
