On a sunny afternoon, with local temperatures hovering around 70, and with traffic problems in every direction due to protests for and against the war, more than 90 players decided to come to downtown Washington to play chess.

K-2 Section: Jeevan Karamsetty, who turned five years old the day before, had a seemingly easy time, sweeping the competition to win another championship trophy.

3-4 Section: Darwin Li defeated co-champion David Kaufman in the blitz play-off to claim the championship trophy.

Grade 5 Section: Ben Lewis won all four of his games to win the section.

Middle School Section: Sixth grader Ved Basu defeated the rest of the tough section to bring home the top trophy.

Adults, High School and Other: Ahmed Abdallah, a student at Cardozo High School, agreed to a draw in the final round, but won the first three and won the section.
