Theophilus Thompson Birthday Party
Theophilus Thompson, born a slave, freed as a consequence of the Civil War, taught to play chess then to read and write and later wrote a book. The U.S. Chess Center honors his accomplishments and memory by holding a tournament in his name each April.
This year, 71 students registered to be part of the tournament, which included receiving a free T-shirt and participating in the post-tournament pizza and cake party.
Grades 7 - 12: Ahmad Abdullah continued to impress, sweeping the section.
Grades 4 - 6: Yale Sosin topped co-champion Andrew Freix in the blitz play-off to end the tournament.
Grade 3: Quentin Moore persevered through tough competition to win all four games.
Kindergarten - Grade 2: The players were small but feisty, playing excellent chess. Daniel Toth scored 4 - 0 to win the championship trophy.
