DC Scholastic Open

February 22, 2003

Attendance at the 2003 District of Columbia Scholastic Open Chess Tournament was down this year from previous years, no doubt due to the weather, but the 220 or so players and their families again had a spectacular time and this tournament.. More than 300 students had registered but a week of bad weather and flooding in many communities on the day of the event kept the numbers of players relatively small.

The level of play was high. Thirty-six elementary schools plus eight middle schools sent teams to The First Baptist Church of the City of Washington, D.C., which again hosted the event with extraordinary generosity and good will.
