Rated Beginners Open
Kindergarten - Grade 3 Section: Quentin Moore and Patrick Yu tied for first place in a section with wonderfully enthusiastic players. Although this was the first tournament for many of the players, two of whom are in kindergarten, they played excellent chess and did not disturb the older players who were competing in the same room.
Grade 4 - 5 Section: Yale Sosin edged the competition in this section with 3½ points.
Grade 6 Section: Craig Hatch defeated Andrew Freix in the second tie-break blitz game (the first had ended in a draw) to win the larger trophy of the two shared by the co-champions. Craig hopes to stay ahead of Andrew for another year or two, he says, noting that he has more than a foot height advantage on the second-grader. If only this were basketball...
Grade 7 - 8: Philip Anderson was the cream of the Middle School crop, slicing through the competition.
Grade 9 through Adult: Two teammates from Northwest High School, Christopher Girardo and Gordon Randall drew with each other but won the rest of their games to become co-champions of the section.
