New Year's Eve Tournament
New Year's Eve at the U.S. Chess Center has become quite a tradition. With kids anxious to get out of the house by the end of the winter break (and parents glad to have them out of the house) the tournament is among the most popular of the year.
This year, 119 players came to play chess, get a cool T-shirt then stick around for pizza, cake and soda once the awards were distributed. The players were divided into five sections.
Kindergarten - 3rd Grade John Mehler swept the section as the only player to win all four games.
4th Grade Craig Saperstein went 4-0 to win his section.
Grades 5 - 6 Andrew Freix won the blitz play-off with Edward Lu to claim the larger of the Co-Champion trophies.
Grades 7 - 8 Philip Anderson took home another big trophy as the only player to win all four games in his section of the tournament.
Grades 9 - 12 Rocco Repetski makes a habit of winning this tournament every year. This year he won all four games.
